Zakat Awareness Still Low, Generosity Abounds

Zakat Fitrah (Zakatul-Fitr) is an obligatory Zakat, to be given before Eidul Fitri. The rate is based on the value of 2.3 kg of rice which is the staple food in this country.

Based on that calculation, MUIS has determined two rates for this year's Zakatul Fitr. A standard rate of $4.50 per person and a higher rate of $6.50 per person. The press release can be found here.

Alhamdulillah, based on the feedback of our 'Amils, more and more people are giving the higher Fitrah rate, according to the rice they consume. For example, a middle-grade Thai fragrant rice costs about $26.50 per 10 kg sack, which is equivalent to about $6.10 for 2.3 kg.

A person who qualifies for the standard rate of $4.50 would be the one who consumes a brand of rice which costs $9.80 per kg or less.

A couple of surprisingly generous inquiries which we received though, was the clients' intention to give $450.00 for the Fitrah obligatory Zakat. Indeed, we would have been very happy to accept, but we hope that the official Singapore Zakat website could display the latest Fitrah rates clearly.
